Lucky Escape

A DIGGER driver working at the bottom of a 35ft deep hole in Tadcaster was almost crushed when a huge excavator toppled in towards him.

He escaped with his life when the enormous machine, which had fallen into the hole, turned upside down and got lodged just a few feet above him.

Sub Officer Bob Hoskins, from Tadcaster Fire Station, said: "The digger could so easily have been crushed. It was luck that this wasn't a fatal incident."

The man had been working in a mini-digger at the bottom of the huge hole as part of Yorkshire Water works at The Fairway, off Stutton Road, on Friday morning.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said the excavator had been lifting a skip of spoil when it toppled into the hole.

The driver of the small digger managed to climb out to safety. The excavator's driver was taken to hospital for shock.

Sub Officer Hoskins said a firefighter went in to turn off both the engines.

On Saturday residents watched as the excavator was pulled from the hole by a giant crane.

The spokesman for Yorkshire Water said: "The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and will take control of the site.” “ Yorkshire Water will of course co-operate fully with any subsequent investigation."

Yorkshire Water has been carrying out work in Tadcaster since October.

The work in Stutton Road is part of an £800,000 project to prevent sewer flooding. The work is being carried out by sub contractors.
