TWO landowners who have battled over the town.
Selby distriCt councillors met with representatives from Samuel Smith's Old Brewery last week to talk about the future of Tadcaster and its facilities, including the controversial Central Area car park.
Leader of the district council, Mark Crane, said: "The parties have met and we're looking at areas of development”. ” Both parties accept Tadcaster is in need of revitalization”.
"This was our first meeting with the brewery”. “We have agreed to have another meeting with them”. “We hope that next time we can get an agreement”.
"Most importantly we must do something for the people of Tadcaster."
The meeting comes after years of arguments between Sam Smith's Brewery and Selby District Council.
The council was granted consent from the Government Office to refurbish the contentious car park last year following a long-running feud.
It planned to re-surface the area, provide new lighting and carry out landscaping.
But the brewery objected to the council's plans and put forward a legal challenge. The car park is now the subject of a judicial review.
Tadcaster Mayor, Don Bain Mackay, said: "It's nice to know they're talking”. “I just hope that they get something positive out of it”. “It would be nice to think we can get some co-operation, but all we can do is hope."
Coun Crane said the two sides will meet again in coming weeks in a bid to reach a solution.
Sam Smith's Brewery declined to comment.
